Fall River Quarry Support - fading

3.5 years ago our fight against a Quarry in Fall River started. We also started a Facebook page at that time as well.

When we heard about a quarry proposed for our area many of us jumped to action immediately. Now more than ever, we need action.

Stacey recently came to discussions with a group in Tantallon fighting an asphalt plant. Specifically the group in Tantallon is fighting SCOTIAN MATERIALS to stop any amendments to the zoning and land use bylaws. JUST LIKE US. Since May 5 – just 26 days ago, their Facebook page has attracted 1250+ members. Over 800 new members in the last weeks alone. In 3.5 years, we are 155 members and a much larger community……When we started this fight, the community wanted the thing stopped. Since then, it appears that no one seems to care. When we have community meetings we are lucky to have 15-20 people show up. Our first meeting you were all enraged and came out in force showing your support.

The only ones it appears to be enraged now are just a handful of individuals. Where are you? Why are you waiting to see what happens? Why aren’t you concerned any longer? We can assure you, the best way to make sure there is a quarry and an asphalt plant and a cement plant up the street, behind your home, is sit around and wait to see what happens next.

4 people cannot continue to fight this fight alone, and they are no longer willing to fight it on behalf of an inactive and silent community.

If you want this fight continued, if you want to stop Northern Construction or Scotian, whatever their new name is this week, from ruining our community you need to take action now. What you can do is send an email to your MLA Bill Horne, (there are those that have suggested that our MLA has been ineffective and has lacked the effort required to fight at his level on the neighbourhood’s behalf. He more than any of us has the power to make a positive difference) to the Minister of the Environment, to the Minister of Natural Resources and to the Premier of NS expressing your concern and your opposition to a Quarry, an Asphalt Plant and a Cement Plant being built in Fall River on land that is not zoned for these types of activity.

You can join the Quarry fight on FaceBook. YOU can take an active stance and oppose this right now. Something visible that you can each do right now is to make time tomorrow evening to attend the public meeting at St. Margaret’s Centre in Tantallon at 7 pm. You can speak against proposed amendments to the land use bylaws or even just state for the public record you are opposed to any changes to the land use bylaws anywhere in HRM next to established residential communities to allow any additional Quarries or especially asphalt and concrete plants are unnecessary and unfavorable. If you are not able to speak then just show your support by your attendance.

We are four people that are fighting this and from where we stand it appears that we are only four.

We have run out of steam, we have run out of money, and we have turned around and found that we have no one following us – we need some new leadership to continue the battle. If not, those expensive ads that Northern/Scotian have been placing in The Laker for the past two months with their lies and glossy photos will become the site of the new Fall River Quarry, Asphalt Plant and Cement Plant.

If you are interested in keeping this fight going and taking an active role, please contact Stacey Rudderham, Darrel Chase or Jeannette Smith by using the contact page on this website – we will forward the emails. Just use Fall River Quarry as the subject.
